A new mother with her child is an amazingly beautiful thing to behold. I was so honored to photograph Christy and her precious baby, Martha. It brought back all my feelings of new motherhood. This crazy intense love for a little person, you hardly know, but love with all your heart. It's scary, and exhausting, and emotional, and wonderful. I remember seeing Lucy for the first time, and thinking, "that was you, all this time. And I didn't know how amazing and beautiful and wonderful you were. I loved you, but I didn't know I would love you this much." Those first few weeks go so quickly, and you barely remember it, because you are hardly sleeping, and trying to figure out feeding, and your body feels like a wreck, and you feel like a wreck, and you forget what a long shower feels like, but it's also some of the most beautiful moments of my life. I think all moms should be photographed with theirs kids as much as possible. Dad's too, but let's face it, mom's tend to get the shaft as far as being in photos with their kids. And it is too precious to not record. Because as sad and wonderful as it is, before you know it, your little munchkin is running around, dressing herself, doing somersaults, telling you, "no!" and basically growing up way faster than you are prepared for.

So thank you Christy for letting me document the beginning of your journey with Martha.
She is beautiful and so are you.

Mountain Love

I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I really, really do. And I'm so lucky to be in all this gorgeous mountain splendor with all my brides and grooms and families. The sad thing is that I never really make to the time to be with my own family up in the mountains. Scott and I decided to rectify that a couple of weekends ago. Here are some of my favorites from a little hike up Cecret Lake in Little Cottonwood and then some tin foil dinners the next day up Big Cottonwood. It was such a refreshing little break. And seriously, look at Lucy. She is so full of mischief and spice and fun, I can't even stand it. Don't judge me dressing her in the same outfit both days. I forgot to do the laundry.

Rachel and Jake's Groomals

Funny story: When I was photographing Rachel and Jake's groomal session, I kept putting Rachel in these tall, tall grasses, or in the middle of the fields, smack dab in nature, pollen flying, grass blowing. And she never said, nay. But Rachel has wicked bad allergies, and it wasn't until I noticed that her eyes were red (super, super red) and watery, that I caught on. I felt so bad. No one wants a bride crying during their session (unless it's happy tears.) But when I think of Rachel and Jake, I think of how that epitomizes how kind and laid back and awesome they both are. Rachel and Jake might be the easiest couple I have ever worked with. I know Rachel is super, super gorgeous (I mean look at her!), but she is so genuine. And watching them together was truly a pleasure. The best part of my job is making connections with people, and becoming a part of their family for a day or so. I'm so happy for the two of them, and I know great things are in store.

Thank you Rachel and Jake for a beautiful session. And Rachel, I'm really, really sorry I didn't notice that you had crazy allergies. Now I always ask before I have a bride step into grass :)

There are lots of beautiful places in the world. And after this session, I was reminded just how stunning Utah can be. I was in awe with the sheer beauty on this late summer day. Kristen and Patrick love all things mountains, so it was a perfect choice for their engagement session. And I kind of fell in love with the two of them together. They were just themselves, which is all I can ever ask of anyone. And let me just take a moment of silence for all the mosquitoes we encountered. Bug spray maybe slowed them down, but in no way stopped them. By the end of the night several had flown into my mouth, and up my nose, not counting the numerous bites we all got. They were like the 3rd wheel at our party. Wait, I'm like the 3rd wheel, so they were like the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th...millionth wheel. But mosquitoes shamitoes, I couldn't have asked for a better couple or a more gorgeous setting.

Here's Lucy's 1st day at the beach at Turtle Bay. She has already grown up so much since April. It's amazing what 4 months can do to an 18-month-old. Amazing and kind of sad. It is so fleeting. Lucy loved the beach, but the ocean, not so much. I love Lucy's crazy hair, big belly and silly smile.

Tuesdays with Lucy ~ Nutella!

I write a lot about brides here, and engagements, and other people's photos I take. But not a lot about my own Lucy. Which is a little ironic, since she is simply the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I would define myself as a mother first, before photographer, although I have had a camera in my hands much longer than I have had a baby in my arms.

So, I thought I would introduce Lucy Tuesday's. Just a little glimpse of our life and what makes up most of my days. What better way to start than a Nutella covered face and a bath? I thought I would be the kind of mom who would have perfectly groomed, polished children. I thought I would be a lot more organized and structured. Turns out, I'm a bit messy as a mom. Lucy has been barefoot most of the summer, covered in chocolate, playing in the dirt, and she is Oliver's favorite face to lick. Turns out, I actually like a bit of a craziness. Life isn't perfect over here, but it is deliciously messy.

Whenever I see the bottom right photo here, I keep singing,

"We're painting the roses red!" I have been watching a lot of, "Alice in Wonderland" with Lucy. But I love these red roses. I saw them when I pulled into the parking lot. In fact, there are a whole lot of cars just on the other side of them. You wouldn't even know, right? We hid them! But what I love even more is sweet Ellie and Mike. This was a blustery, blustery day, and we thought it might rain, but it didn't. Instead, we got lots of pretty light, and lots of crazy wind, and Elle was beautiful and Mike handsome.

Her dress was custom made by Melissa Blackburn, and was so amazing. Can you see the detail work in the skirt? Unreal. Dresses have come so far since my wedding 11 years ago. I'm a little jealous. Her flowers were by Caroline May, whose lovely work I have seen so much of this year.

Ellie and Mike were married last Thursday, another blustery day that threatened to rain, but didn't. Congratulations you two! Ellie and Mike are having a Greece honeymoon. I might be a little jealous about that too :)

Baby Tate

There is so many wonderful things I could say about this session,

How gorgeous Kirstin is, or how lovely the light was, or how great David is, or how much I liked Kirstin's family (hi guys!), or that I thought her dress was stunning, and Cinderellish, in the most beautiful, simple way. Or how Kirstin almost fainted and her mom had to run and get snacks from the mental hospital (okay, that part might not be wonderful, but it's a funny story, now.)

I wont say any of those things though, and just show you the pictures. Because I LOVE them. Kirstin and David are tying the knot next week, and although I'm sad I couldn't be there on their big day, I'm so happy I got to know them with their engagements and bridals. Good luck next week! Ashlee and Nate drove all the way up from Manti, early in the morning, with a power outage, to do their engagement session. Not to mention a last minute location change due to weather. I think it all worked out though! I normally don't do morning sessions, but I think this one has my mind changed. I loved every single photo, and that has to do a little with the light, but a lot with how great Ashlee and Nate are together. They are so comfortable and relaxed and, you know, in love. Thank you Ashlee and Nate! I loved getting to know all about you, how you met (Vegas!) and what your future plans are.

The genius solution to a super windy day? A super awesome hat. Kirstin and David were fabulous and I had so much fun working with them! Kirstin gave me a heads up that they were both a little tall, and I'm a lot short, but I think it worked out pretty good :) And if you think Kirstin looks pretty here, you should see her in her wedding dress. STUNNING! I'm so sad I wasn't available to photograph their wedding in August, but I'm super glad that I got to work with them on engagements and bridals!

Ah, Lucy, lover of dogs, barefeet, fruit snacks, Tangled, peek-a-boo, walking in the grocery store and pulling things off the shelf, skipping, running, kisses, dancing, exploring, shoes, swimming and climbing. Fights diaper changes, clothes changes, meal time and bed time. Loves to snuggle and march her own little way. Says, "I love you much." and "no, no, no, MINE! Stop it."

This little being is full of mischief and sparkle and spice. At one moment I can be totally frustrated, and the next completely smitten. Parenthood is the craziest, funniest, most stressful and wonderful thing I have ever done.

Oh Lucy, you steal my heart every day.

Jude and Jet

I photograph kids! I know it probably doesn't seem like it with proportion of weddings I post, but I love photographing kids and Jet and Jude have to be the two cutest boys ever. Jude's long, skinny legs and Jet's sneaky smile, had me laughing the whole time. This shoot was an experiment of sorts for me. It was my first time shooting all film for a sitting. I have to admit, I was a little nervous shooting two high energy boys without my trusty, speedy digital camera, but I left it at home and loaded up on film. Also, it was my first mini-session. Which means, we just played and ran around for half an hour. Mini sessions and film are both something I have wanted to try for awhile. I really love the idea of a non-traditional shoot, one where we just run, wrestle, play super heroes and laugh. I like the idea of capturing relationships and emotions, scraped up knees and and grass stains. I think these photos accomplished that. I hope so!

Thanks Cammie for bringing your cuties down. I should mention that Cammie is one of my oldest/dearest friends who I met working at the same call center where I met my Scott. I haven't seen her for over a year and I loved getting together. Afterwards, Lucy and Scott joined up for a picnic. And then it rained. So our picnic ended up inside, which sounds about right (it always rains when I'm with friends, or planning parties!)

I first met Jake a couple of summer ago, when I was photographing his sister, Alex's wedding. His mom looked at me, and said, "Jake you're next!" And here we are two years later, and Jake is marrying an absolutely beautiful girl. Rachel is as sweet and lovely as they come. Chelsey and Adam + a Hard Week

Chelsey and Adam are so cute! Or, should I say Awesome? I'm working on gender neutral words, since I don't think most of my grooms like being called pretty or cute, which I tend to say a lot. So, Adam, you are awesome! Chelsey you are awesome too!

I have also had a bit of crazy week, on the personal front. My dad had emergency heart bypass surgery on Tuesday. It has been scary, surreal, and exhausting, but he is doing good and I'm doing good. And I know I tend to not get too personal on here, but it is kind of a big deal. So, if I'm a tad slower in returning emails, there is a very good reason! Thanks for being patient as I try to split my time between the hospital, my family and work. The good news, he now sounds just like my dad again. Yesterday was frightening, but today is much, much better.

Polaroids Are the Best and an Announcement

Scott, Lucy and I are soon going to be taking a little trip. And by little trip, I mean a big trip to a secret, tropical destination. This is exciting stuff! At least exciting for us, and so I need to spread the joy and create some super amazing and wonderful things for my blog when I'm gone. And since I'm in the process of organizing all 600+ of my Polaroids, I'm doing a Polaroid a day for the week! Wow! Exciting, right? I think yes. So, stay tuned next week. There will be a Polaroid Parade, complete with streamers and a 10K.

I love sharing these little Polaroids from my life. As I have been organizing them, I may have gotten a little teary. It's amazing to see 3 years of your life laid out in these little hand size prints. Speaking of Polaroids, I have about 10 boxes left, and they are coming with me.

I'm getting soo caught up these days on posting. Amie and Steven's wedding was from last June! I may not fully get all my weddings from last year posted, but I'm sure going to try.

What can I say about this wedding? It was sunny, I love the Gardenia in Amie's hair, I loved their huge families, and that Amie is the only sister to all those brothers. I loved that it was so, so sunny and there was a fun swing, and lots of good food, and a pretty house. Most of all I just really liked working with Amie and Steven. They are both so down to earth, and easy going. The wedding was just like hanging out with family. I'm the oldest sister to 5 siblings, so it felt very familiar :)

Congrats Amie and Steven on your almost one year anniversary! Whoohoo!

Lyndsay and Evan!

What can I say? Lyndsay and Evan's wedding was gorgeous and I was so lucky to be invited to beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho to share it with them. Lyndsay and Evan met at Gonzaga (on a study abroad), and I have a special place in my heart for Spokane. I once shot a wedding in Spokane (shout out to Rachel and Paul), and have visited the Wildcats campus. And I love Sun Valley. It's the perfect place to fly-fish, bike ride or have a wedding. Seriously, how amazing is this back drop for a wedding? The Ceremony was held at Our Lady of the Snow, and the reception in Lyndsay's parents backyard. Lyndsay's dress? Amazing. The dance party? Awesome. and Lyndsay and Evan are not only gorgeous together, but super sweet and kind. Oh, and check out the pictures of the speeches. Lyndsay's brother gave the funniest speech I have ever heard. I was in tears. Something about a lone wolf...

Ah me, I can't get over how lovely the late afternoon winter light was for Mari and Blake. It might have been cold, but it was perfect! I know I always say this, but I'm so grateful to work with with such wonderful couples and families. Mari and Blake were a dream to work with. Super kind and fun. It was a lovely day and I was the lucky girl to photograph it! I shot a lot of BW at the reception, which I love so much.

I always think a send-off adds an exclamation point to the end of the wedding day. I didn't have one when I got married and it was a little anti-climatic. Family was cleaning up, and we were like, "well, I guess we will go." :)

You don't need bubbles, or sparklers or Chinese lanterns, you just need a bunch of people cheering you on. It ends your wedding on the perfect high note. And Ilford 3200 is fast becoming my send-off film of choice. I love these two shots. I think they capture the excitement of a new life together. Now I really need to post the whole wedding.

Zion + Winter

A couple of weeks ago Scott, Lucy and I headed off to Southern Utah hoping for some sunny weather. We didn't get any sun, but we did avoid the snow storms that hit northern Utah. And we also got to spend one whole day in Zion's National Park. It was a quick trip down. Half a day to drive down, a full day in the park with a 16-month-old and then half a day drive back.

When I think of Zion, I think of red rock, blue skies and hot weather. But it is really pretty in the winter too. Almost no one was there, all of our favorite restaurants were still open, and we could drive our car through the park versus taking the bus. The only problem is that we didn't quite bring enough warm clothes. Luckily, Lucy is a rockstar and loves hiking. Even when my batteries died during the hike, and I walked back down to get my backpack (which I always usually have on), to get the batteries I knew I packed, only to realize I packed my light meter batteries instead. Luckily, there were some used batteries in there with enough charge. And back up the hike we went only to realize we were about 100 yards away from the finish when I turned around and went back down. Oops!

It was great a little mid-winter break. Just enough to carry us through to Spring.

John and Kelsi

This wedding was so, so, so much fun. There was so many wonderful, and thoughtful details. From fabulous food, to a live band and everything in between. John and Kelsi had the Ceremony and Reception in their backyard, and it was the perfect spot. Their property looks out over the Wasatch mountains and is nestled into horse country. I particularly loved the lanterns out in the fields, and the furniture and trees that were placed throughout the yard. It really gave the space a relaxed, lounge feel. The huge swatches of fabric that hung over the dance floor and the chandeliers filled to the brim with flowers was also pretty awesome. I can't thank John and Kelsi enough. I also got to hang out with one of my good, good friends, Kim, who 2nd shot for me that day. Congratulations John and Kelsi! This post may be a little late (9 month anniversary!), but late then never :)

Tess and Chris's Wedding

Tess and Chris had a lovely and very cold winter wedding. In fact, it may have been one of the coldest weddings I have ever shot. I literally couldn't press the shutter by the time we were done outside. Luckily, some amazing hot chocolate was waiting for us at the reception. Mmmmm! I had so much fun at this wedding. Good food, lovely people, and lots of dancing. Fantastic!

Allyssa and Noah

Allyssa and Noah had the sweetest wedding ever. They worked together to create all of their decorations, and I thought that was just about perfect. Their pinata was even my inspiration for Lucy's 1st birthday pinata! Their wedding was low key, family oriented (how cool is a pinata!), and lovely. I was so happy to share the day with them. Here are some of Allyssa's thoughts on the day,

Our wedding was the ultimate DIY wedding. We had a small budget so with the help of friends and family we handmade most of our wedding details like the fabric flowers for the centerpieces and bouquets, my brooch bouquet, decorations, and our favorite thing about the wedding- the pinata! We decided to do a pinata instead of party favors and we knew all the kids would love it too. I love vintage everything so I knew our whole wedding would be based around the rustic vintage look. I got some of my ideas and inspirations from ruffledblog.com, and ebay, etsy, and antique shops were my go to places for the bridesmaids dresses, tablecloths, the brooches, vintage centerpieces, etc.

We knew all along we wanted to have the ceremony in the mountains so after a lot of searching we found the perfect little clearing up Millcreek Canyon. I wanted to be comfortable so I decided to ditch my cute vintage pumps and I was barefoot all day. My dress was inspired by a dress that I had seen on Ruffledblog, I bought a similar one and had it reconstructed, and in true vintage fashion we got Noah's suit from the thrift store.

It turned out to be a wonderful day and knowing we created most of it ourselves made it that much more special!

Want to Shoot Film?

10 years ago, I was in art school. 10 years ago I was shooting exclusively film and absolutely loved it. I swore it was all I ever needed. And then 6 years ago I got my first photography job and was handed a digital camera. And that was that for 4 years. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed digital. It was a new process for me and I spent several years trying to master a new medium. But I always missed film. I missed the whole process, the range, the colors, the grain (Oh! the grain!) I couldn't get my digital photos to completely look the way I want. It was missing some of the depth and texture. I knew film was something I wanted to go back to. But I was scared. I was used to digital. It was safe. I could check my LCD screen to make sure I was okay. However, I found myself continually being drawn to film photographers. There was something about their work that spoke to me. it fit so well with my own personal aesthetic. I finally recognized while their work was beautiful, it was the medium that I was relating too. I finally asked myself, if I loved it so much why wasn't I shooting film? The answers were easy,

I had the digital set-up
I had the confidence in digital
I had never shot film for anything but personal work

Enter the Film is Not Dead Workshop and Jonathan Canlas. It gave me the confidence to try something new (it felt new to me all over again), push myself, and gave me the know how to grow as an artist and business owner. I needed technical answers, and that is what I learned, in addition to finding an amazing support network. Last year I began incorporating film back in. And it started a bit of a love affair. While I definitely agree that the magic of the photo belongs to the skill of the artist, there are 2 main reasons I'm in love with film,

-Workflow

With film I get exactly the look I want. With film my workflow is cut by half, if not more.

So, when I found out Jonathan was creating a Digital Guide Photographers Guide to Shooting Film, I couldn't have been more excited. I have so many people ask me for advice on how to shoot film or where to begin. I always recommend the workshop. But sometimes workshops aren't practical. I understand. It took me 3 years to do my first and only workshop. I had to save up for it. Now enter the film guide. It's all the info from the workshop packed into 96 pages. I have read it cover to cover and it is amazing. It goes through, step-by-step, on film choices, camera choices, how to expose for each film, how to organize, where to process. It is so much more in-depth and straightforward than I could ever put together. Plus, there are beautiful examples throughout the entire PDF.

So here is the link to buy the book. It is $89 through the 22nd and then changes to $150, which is think is a pretty amazing deal!

If you have ever wanted to shoot film, this is definitely worth your money. My recommendation is to start small. I started out with a used 35mm camera I bought online, that was compatible with my digital lenses. My initial investment was $250. It is easier than you think.

And since I want to be completely transparent, I do believe 100% in film, Jonathan Canlas and the quality of the workbook. I would advertise for it either way. But I also get a few bucks if you buy it. Which is nice for me. But even nicer for you. Trust me.

Sarajane And Richie's Spring Wedding

Like promised, I finally have Sarajane and Richie's wedding up! It makes me long for Spring and green, green grass and flowering trees. Sarajane and Richie's event was so classy. They make a picture perfect couple, and Sarajane's dress is absolutely to die for. Penny outdid herself, yet again.

I truly loved working with Sarajane and Richie and their sweet families. It was an honor to be a part of it! Congratulations you guys! Is it 9 months of marriage now?!

An Announcement

Last year I started making some significant changes to my business, primarily which was incorporating film into my shoots. It is a direction I have wanted to go for a very long time, and I feel it has impacted my photography positively and significantly. However, my pricing structure is several years old, and is based off of a completely digital workflow. This year I have also wanted to include more film into my weddings and sessions. So, I'm happy to announce that as of March 1st, 2011, I will be introducing all new wedding packages. The pricing structure is pretty much the same, with a few adjustments. The changes reflect my commitment to film and quality for all of my brides and families, is based off of customer feedback, and incorporates additional packages that are more suited to travel weddings.

In addition, I will be taking on less weddings than I have in the past. I feel like this will give me more time to dedicate to each and every wedding, family, couple and also give my sweet daughter and husband, more of my time.
Which they definitely deserve as well.
